YOU'RE MAKING a...Wind powered device | |
|---|---|
| Anyone got anything for wind? (insert fart gags here) Your job is to create a wind-powered gizmo which can be fixed to one point or maybe it walks? Further ideas & starting points Think about using a normal fan connected by cogs, ropes and chains or perhaps change the orientation of the fan blades to act more like water wheel paddles and direct some airflow through a tunnel towards the blades? There's a number of things you can do with that circular motion that can range from moving figures like automatons to practical uses like crushing things or even generating electricity if you've got a dynamo you can use. Consider how you'll change the motion from circular to linear by using a slider-crank setup or possibly a cam. You also don't have to limit yourself to one cam. Are there ways to improve the way in which you focus the wind power? Larger blades, their orientation (including vertical like the Darrieus or Savonius wind turbine designs) and funnelling the wind somehow are all options, as is making the fan move to face the wind by adding a tail (vane) and making the whole assembly rotate. Not got that much wind? Can always opt for something water powered instead. | |
OUT OF...Metal | |
|---|---|
| Any metal of choice. Sheet, bar stock, solid pieces... it doesn't matter, and any method to fix them together. | |
USING...Bolted | |
|---|---|
| Nuts and bolts and anything to make the holes to use them. You can always get creative with the array of nuts and bolts out there, but nothing else can used to hold the final piece together. | |

Be sure to add #m38project to any online posts and tag @maker38uk if you can. Always great to see what gets created.
Further info
Most of these project ideas and options have been selected to be as accessible as possible to a wide range of people. They should be considered as starting points for your own ideas and plans to be developed from and are intentionally ‘open’ so that different makers will create different designs whilst overcoming the challenges of the material and tool restrictions that have been chosen for them.
Depending on the limitations of someone’s workshop the generated project might not always be suitable, so if that happens you can just generate another.
The above doesn’t limit you from sanding, adding polish or finishes, and above all else, make sure that however you’re working on a project that you do so safely and with supervision or help where necessary.
Top thing to remember, have fun with this. Be inventive, share the challenges you faced and also let everyone see what you created.
