Nutcracker

Nutcracker
Sounds painful. Design and build a nutcracker that can safely break the shell of walnuts and Brazil nuts repeatedly. Think about levers, clamps, vices and similar to achieve your crushing ambition.

Further ideas & starting points
Try not to hammer the nuts as you'll probably obliterate them.

The real finesse comes with cracking the nuts in a controlled fashion by using something like a screw or vice to gradually apply pressure to break the outer shell and keep most of the nut intact.

That said, you could just smash the hell out of them, but how will you do it so no shell gets mixed with the edible bits of the nut?

Pallets

Pallets
This isn't just any wood, this is beaten up and pre-used. Find as many pallets as you need and be sure to get permission before nabbing them. Also be sure to clean the wood up properly after removing any rusty nails carefully.

Screw it

Screws
No nails, no glue, no bolts, just screws for the final fix. Washers are acceptable, but only just.

Further info

Most of these project ideas and options have been selected to be as accessible as possible to a wide range of people. They should be considered as starting points for your own ideas and plans to be developed from and are intentionally ‘open’ so that different makers will create different designs whilst overcoming the challenges of the material and tool restrictions that have been chosen for them.

Depending on the limitations of someone’s workshop the generated project might not always be suitable, so if that happens you can just generate another.

The above doesn’t limit you from sanding, adding polish or finishes, and above all else, make sure that however you’re working on a project that you do so safely and with supervision or help where necessary.

Top thing to remember, have fun with this. Be inventive, share the challenges you faced and also let everyone see what you created.
